Down syndrome

Down syndrome (DS) or Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features, and mild to moderate intellectual disability. The average IQ of a young adult with Down’s syndrome is 50, equivalent to the mental age of an 8- or 9-year-old child, but this varies widely. Globally, as of 2010, Down syndrome occurs in about 1 per 1000 births.

To improve the development of children with disability and achieve maximum exposure to their potential for growth and development, we offer the following:

Early childhood intervention
Screening for common problems and advise for medical treatment where indicated
Counselling for a good family environment
Education and proper care to improve quality of life.
Work-related training for economic independence

Raising a child with Down syndrome is more work for parents than raising an unaffected child. We, at AHEAD, offer our support and guidance to the children and their families with our team of experienced and well qualified special educators, specialists and therapists. This is achieved through interactive sessions with our specialists, regular workshopsand advice on home management programs, utilization of talents of parents and siblings and encouraging active participation in various programs
