AHEAD has been organizing various events, workshops and seminars to spread awareness of those who are “differently abled” and motivates the community to get involved and join hands in the spirit of inclusion and their overall social development.
“World Autism Awareness Day” celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism world over. Every year AHEAD organizes Awareness walk for Autism to generate awareness regarding “Autism” in the society. The event was inaugurated by the Brand Ambassador of AHEAD Shri Soumitra Chaterjee, an eminent and respected film personality and was attended by students, teachers, parents, volunteers and many others from all walks of life.
Students of AHEAD participated in State Games 2014 for Specially-abled Childrenorganized by Government of West Bengal and won certificates and honours.
A workshopon SAHAJAYOGA, method of meditation based on Self Realization, was conducted by Mr AniruddhaMaitra for the parents and staff of AHEAD to help them in stress management.
Facilitators: Mrs Rotrout Roy Chowdhury, practising psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, family and marital therapist, Dr Ruma Mukherjee, psychologist and experienced child counsellor and Learning Systems – an organisation with the initiative “Cinema for a cause”. Abhishek Ganguly’s movie “Voices” was screened. Speeches were followed by a short inspirational documentary on one of AHEAD’s student Titas Pal, and was an example on how we can help these children to realize and utilize their potential and enjoy it.
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed on March 21. On this day, people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world organize and participate in activities and events to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.AHEAD organized a cultural program of Baul’s song by The Baul of Bengal
Facilitator: Dr.Sudeep K. Som, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist This session was to help the teachers realize their potential, help them overcome their frustrations and depressions while working with special children and keep themselves motivated. He also gave ideas on how to effectively communicate with the students and their families, keeping in mind the psychological aspects.
Facilitator: Dr Amit Ranjan Biswas, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Developmental Neuropsychiatrist, Ex-Senior Lecturer, University of London An interactive session was organized for the teachers on 9th July and 14th July for the parents of AHEAD. Dr Biswas gave ideas about the problems and difficulties faced by persons in Autism Spectrum and how to deal with them as teachers and parents. He answered child specific queries which helped both teachers and parents immensely. The program was enriched by SmtParamita Biswas (Dr Amit Ranjan Biswas), an eminent vocalist who presented Tagore’s song. Both of them were honoured by AHEAD.
A visit was organized by AHEAD in which Ms ShirinAntia gave valuable inputs and directions to the teaching professionals regarding new developments and latest practices in teaching hearing impaired students. There was also a discussion about organizing Distance Learning Programme for teachers in tie-up with University of Amazon.
An interactive session with parents was conducted to give information on Nirmaya Health Insurance Scheme for welfare of persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities. Ms. Sonali Nandi from National Trust also disseminated information on the Guidelines to Local level Committees given by The National Trust.
AHEAD organized a seminar by Ms. Sunila Banerjee Mitraon Music Therapy, a growing field of health care and explained the benefits of music in helping children with disabilitiesas music affects the body mind in many powerful ways Hope Abides, a US based organization supporting our cause Mr Brent Adams, President of Hope Abide visited Ahead and expressed his appreciation for the work being done by us and increased their quantum of support.

AHEAD is the proud recipient of the “Bharat Nirman Award, 2013” a prestigious Institution Award in recognition of its exemplary contribution in the field of Rehabilitation of Autistics and mentally challenged Children
AHEAD received the state award in 2012 for creating “Outstanding Barrier Free Environment” in school premises. AHEAD school buses are also barrier free and wheel chair accessible.
Very recently we have been conferred The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence for the year 2014 under the category – “A School That Cares”.
Sri Soumitra Chatterjee, the iconic Bengali film and stage actor and poet , awardee of Padma Bhusan and Dada Saheb Phalke awards for his contribution to Indian cinema, has agreed to be AHEAD’s Brand Ambassador. He said he is proud to be associated with the noble cause and AHEAD. He praised our organization and expressed his admiration for the work AHEAD is doing for last three decades, of which he is himself a witness
33rd Foundation Event celebrated at Kalamandir in August 2012 was graced by the presence of HE Shri M. K. Narayanan, Governor West Bengal and SmtPadmini Narayanan. Representatives of Shri Narayanan visited school before the event and were highly pleased with AHEAD activity and have promised to be by our side. Shri Narayanan praised AHEAD for her yeomen service and have encouraged us to march forward.
